"Collaboration, Cooperation, Coopetition; Putting Aside Differences to Develop Peace Amongst All"
Our world is rich with diverse cultures, ideas, and interests where differences are celebrated and embraced. Unfortunately, in a time where everything is rapidly shifting and becoming more convoluted through wars, genocides and crises, it is difficult to put aside differences and focus on finding solutions. Therefore, ENIMUN’ 2025 underscores initiatives with collaboration, cooperation and coopetition during times of struggles in order to espial expedient solutions to ongoing conflicts.
In today’s interconnected world, collaboration has become more exigent than ever. Collaboration is the foundation of any successful endeavor whether it is solving disputes amongst individuals or entire countries. The complicated nature of universal problems of today, such as climate change, geopolitical conflicts and pandemics, call for a multifarious approach, only applicable through the power of collaboration. It involves coming together with a shared purpose and working towards a common goal. An example that illustrates this situation perfectly is the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change which aims to “increase the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels” [1] and it was adopted by 196 countries at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France. This agreement demonstrated how nations could come together and find elucidations to a global environmental crisis that is unattainable to solve without the contribution of others. This is clear proof that with the correct motivations, it is possible to look past cultural differences and collaborate. To encapsulate, collaboration encourages us to look past our differences as traits and view them as opportunities that can be harnessed as a tool for communication. It creates a sense of shared responsibility where the success of one becomes the success of all.
When it comes to cooperation it goes way beyond working together. Cooperating means finding middle grounds and common grounds, it means compromising, it means moving past any differences. Cooperation is vital for solving recent world issues as it fosters unity and collective problem-solving which provides peace and stability to the world. A very novel example of this is the conflict surrounding Russia and Ukraine. This strife started when Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. At the same time, Russia occupied and annexed Crimea which was the beginning of the war in 2014. International cooperation is compulsory in order to send humanitarian aid and diminish the impacts of surrounding hostilities such as the refugee crisis, sexism, abuse of citizens and racism. In order to decrease the escalation of the situation as much as possible, the United Nations along with many other nations have coordinated aid efforts, imposed sanctions and facilitated dialogue. Similarly, cooperation is necessary to assist the conflicts and crises in the Middle East such as the refugee crisis in Syria. In regards to the partnership and teamwork of several countries, thousands of displaced citizens have been able to receive much obligatory help and resources. Both of these examples from current global events demonstrate that cooperation makes it so much more accessible for nations to de-escalate conflicts, provide aid and solve national or international issues.
The definition of coopetition is “the collaboration and cooperation of two competitors”[7]. Despite the fact that coopetition is a battle to win on its own, since it is between two competitors, it can win further battles if it is executed wisely especially when attempting to discern methods to resolve universal issues. Coopetition combines drive and collaborative efforts which quickens the time spent on recognizing solutions and more time on accomplishing them. A notable example of this was the coopetition of the companies Pfizer and Biontech in trying to create the covid vaccine. When Covid-19 first hit, the two pharmaceutical companies were agile in sharing data and participating in teamwork in order to create a vaccine both quickly and that worked efficiently. Even though BioNtech was ahead of Pfizer, they needed to accelerate developments and so, Pfizer contributed research and new developments. The companies were able to manufacture millions of vaccines and signed several deals with the government. One that must be highlighted is their diligence and determination on sending five hundred million vaccines to less economically developed countries and third world countries. This blend of rivalry and partnership proved that coopetition can benefit competitors and also benefit the world at large.
In conclusion, collaboration, cooperation and coopetition are all incredibly essential concepts that we have to exploit. As the rising generations, we are faced with the unfortunate reality that there are various disparate political, economic, environmental and ethical problems to be addressed. The horrifying truth is that most of these issues are caused by the barriers built based on our distinctions. It is so important that we break down these barriers and put our incongruities aside in order to resolve these issues and make the world a better place. In ENIMUN’ 2025, it is our plan to serve as a platform to subvert these barriers and discuss given issues by embracing togetherness.
